Each new year brings updated financial limits and thresholds for estate planning, long‑term care, and special needs planning. Below are the key numbers for 2026.
Estate and Gift Tax
- Federal lifetime gift and estate tax exemption: $15 million per individual, $30 million for married couples.
- Maine estate tax exemption: $7,160,000 per individual.
- Annual federal gift tax exclusion: $19,000 per donee.
- No gift tax is imposed by Maine.
Social Security and Medicare
- COLA increase of 2.8%.
- Supplemental Security Income (SSI) full benefit rate: $994 for individuals, $1,491 for couples.
- Medicare Part B standard monthly premium: $202.90.
- Skilled nursing facility daily coinsurance (days 21–100): $217 per day.
MaineCare (Maine’s Medicaid)
- Income limit for community MaineCare: $1,305 per month. Income limit for MaineCare waiver programs (such as MaineCare in-home nursing services): $2,982 per month.
- Asset limit for an individual remains at $10,000. Community spouse resource allowance for MaineCare nursing home benefits: $162,660.
- Penalty divisor for transfers within five years of applying for MaineCare long-term care benefits (in-home care, residential care, or nursing home care): $12,294, set to increase in June 2026.
Other Benefit Planning
- ABLE account annual contribution limit: $20,000.
- QMB (Medicare Savings Program) and DEL (Drugs for the Elderly and Disabled) monthly income limit: $2,413 for individuals, $3,261 for couples.
