Stetson Special Needs Trusts Conference 2016
November 1st, 2016
Jane Skelton presented at the annual National Conference on Special Needs Trusts and Special Needs Planning in St. Petersburg, Florida, on October 20, 2016. This is the 18th year that the Stetson University College of Law has provided this nationally recognized, in-depth review of major issues in special needs planning and in the creation, administration and monitoring of special needs trusts.
This year's Stetson conference featured two pre-conference intensives, one on taxation and one on pooled trusts. There was also a Q & A via video conference with Kenneth Brown from the Social Security Administration's Office of SSI and Program Integrity Policy. The keynote speaker was Charlie Weis, former Notre Dame and Kansas football coach who spearheaded the construction of Hannah's Home, a group home for 14 special needs residents, one of whom is his daughter.
On October 22nd, Jane attended the semiannual meeting of the Special Needs Alliance, a national, not for profit organization of attorneys dedicated to the practice of disability and public benefits law. Individuals with disabilities, their families and their advisors rely on the SNA to connect them with nearby attorneys who focus their practices in the disability law arena. The SNA is an invitation-only organization. SNA membership is based on a combination of relevant legal experience in the disability and elder law fields, active participation with national, state and local disability advocacy organizations, and professional reputation.
