National Elder Law Month
May 24th, 2019
May is National Elder Law Month! At Maine Elder Law Firm, a practice of Rudman Winchell, our elder law services include long-term care planning and asset protection planning, advance health care directives and financial powers of attorney, Maine Medicaid (MaineCare) planning and MaineCare applications, and everything in between.
We love what we do, and we want to share why we chose elder law:
Jane Skelton: I spent the first several years of my legal career as a workers’ compensation attorney, and every matter was adversarial. My days were spent in hearings and depositions. Then I transitioned to estate planning and found I enjoyed working with clients to give “voice” to their goals. But then I discovered the relatively new area of elder law and special needs planning, and I knew that I never wanted to do anything else. I enjoy the intellectual challenge of preserving assets for individuals who also want to (or need to) qualify for public benefits. It is an honor to serve our great clients.
Rachel Trafton: Maine Elder Law Firm and elder law as a practice area are the perfect fit for me with my undergraduate degree in social work and a law degree. We often see families that have an immediate need for long-term care, such as care in a nursing home, in a residential care/assisted living facility, or in the home. I get to work closely with my clients and their families during a very stressful and often emotional time, while also navigating the complicated MaineCare system together.
Sarah Barr: During my first few years of practicing law, my job involved helping veterans with disabilities obtain important public benefits. As I developed relationships with these clients and heard their stories, I knew I wanted to devote my legal career to helping seniors access resources and work through the legal challenges that sometimes arise in this later season of life. I am privileged to get to know these hardworking individuals who have given so much to their families and communities.
